Let's talk a little about beard care.
I thought it wise to share a few tips to help soften your beard.
Tip #1
Washing Your Beard
If you're over-washing your beard or using products meant for your scalp, this can cause the beard to become brittle and dry. Keep the foam washing to roughly 2-4 times per week if you can, and use something natural, such as African black soap shampoo, our beard soap or Castille soap instead of shampoo that has harsh ingredients that can dry out your face and hair. Yes, it's possible to wash your face without shampooing your beard each time.
Don't panic when you hear me say you should minimise washing to a few times a week. It doesn't mean you can't rinse your beard daily. You can shower, soak the beard and let the water run through it. This is enough to clean the beard without having to add soaps or shampoos to it. “Water washing”.
Tip #2
Drying your beard
When drying your beard after washing, pat it dry with a cotton towel or microfiber towel. Don't rub aggressively with traditional cloth or body towel as this leads to breakage.
Tip #3
Conditioning your beard
Instead of using hair conditioner on your beard, opt for a beard oil instead. Better yet, a beard butter for extra conditioning and softness. Don't use head hair conditioner for your beard.
Condition your beard after you've rinsed or washed it, as this will allow the ingredients to pass through your hair's cuticle as well as into your skin. Use your wooden beard comb to help distribute the oils to the hair.
If you're deep into this conditioning idea , you can also try a deep-conditioning routine where you apply your oils or butter and then sleep with a Marley Grey buff over your beard. This will lock in the oils and allow them to absorb into the hair shafts while you sleep.
Tip #4
Protect Your Beard While Sleeping
We joked about the beard bonnet a few years back but... it's actually as beneficial as protecting your hair at night.
When we sleep, we move quite often. Couple the moving with a cotton pillowcase and together they’ll lead to breakage and the absorption of your beard's oils into your pillow .
An alternative to the buff would be a satin pillowcase. These are gentle on the face/skin and hair. They also won't be absorbing the oils from your beard, whether it's natural sebum or oil you put in as a conditioning treatment. Even better, we have a waterproof pillowcase which protects your pillow from oil stains if that is a concern.
Anyhoooo... Softening your beard isn't a tough job, but it's something that needs to be cared for before it gets out of hand. Lol
Don't let your beard become unruly and unhealthy due to neglect: take care of your beard to keep it looking on point and touchable for however long you choose to keep growing it.
Be blessed.
